Wedding Etiquette – What is An Average Wedding Gift? | by Dee Grant | Pictures By Mom | Where Moms Learn Photography | During the discussion on our article “Wedding Gift Etiquette – How Much To Give” and the original Hamilton Spectator article that sparked the original furor – it seems many wedding guests come from very different backgrounds and have very diverse opinions on wedding gift giving etiquette. So lets just put etiquette aside for a moment and only look at what is average. How much does an average wedding guest give as a wedding gift? How much does it cost the average guest to attend a wedding? Well, American Express recently compiled a survey that answers just that! What is An Average Wedding Gift? According to the American Express survey, the average wedding gift is $144 for a family member and $97 for a close friend. More affluent wedding guests give an average wedding gift worth $251 for any wedding they attend, while co-workers come in at the low end of the scale at an average of $66. Not surprisingly, the more removed a wedding guest is from the bride and groom, the smaller their wedding gift tends to be. What is The Average Cost For a Guest to Attend A Wedding? Again, according to the American Express survey, the average guests spends $539 to attend a wedding. This includes wedding related expenses such as bachelor / bachelorette parties, transportation and hotels, clothing and accessories, babysitting and the wedding gift. If you are in the wedding party – the average bridesmaid or groomsmen spent $577 to attend a wedding. Average Wedding Gift Expense Summary Conclusion There is a huge variation between weddings in different regions, different socioeconomic circumstances and different cultures. Some weddings will certainly cost quite a bit more to attend. Some less. However, if you want to know what the average wedding guest spends out of pocket on a wedding gift and in total to attend a wedding, the American Express survey is a good benchmark. What Do You Think? How much do you plan on spending at the next wedding you attend? What do you consider when deciding on a wedding gift? When is it appropriate to spend less than average to attend a wedding? What cultural wedding traditions should you consider? Please leave a comment below!
