hillenga_jennifer_blog.jpgJen Hillenga, M. Photog. Cr., was kind enough to join us in the PPA Studio to film some upcoming PPAedu segments. While not wowing us with her endless creativity and knowledge, Jen took the time to answer your questions submitted to us @OurPPA (Twitter) or /OurPPA (Facebook). From practical advice on photography to the best sno-cones in the world, we learned all about the oh-so-creative Jen Hillenga.

Mary Lou Guinn asked: Studio management software - any recommendations?

Keep it simple. We use a combination of Quick Books and Google calendar. It has color coordination and a quick glance feature that makes our lives so much easier. It's also really great for marketing plans and counting out from deadlines. We haven't had a need for a big system, but use additional things like PhotoBiz to see who viewed images and incorporate that into the sales process. Pro Select is also great for sales. We're kind of old fashioned with client traveler, but it works for us. There's no "one stop shop" for what we do, so we put together our own system with a variety of software.

Denise Hasty asked: Having trouble with lighting, especially with darker subjects. What is the best setting for my camera when shooting in the studio and how do I avoid grainy and shadowy photos? / I have a Canon XSI450d

To create the best image, it usually works best to use a low ISO to minimize the grain and make sure you're using enough light. It helps to utilize the best equipment and tools to capture the best image. If you're in an indoor setting with limited light, investing in a camera that can go to a low ISO setting will greatly reduce the granularity in the image. In the outdoors with plenty of light, it's not as important, but you definitely need it in darker situations.

OurPPA asked: What are your thoughts on digital backgrounds?

I think there's a great place for digital backgrounds! I use them more for composite images. For example, we will photograph individuals on white, create the composition and drop in the digital background when working with a group setting. They can be nice with the right situation, but it's not a fix-all. It can be easy to get carried away and the digital can be overdone, not as natural.

OurPPA asked: Favorite color?

Black! It's the absence of color with light, and all of the colors with pigment.

OurPPA asked: Chocolate, vanilla or strawberry?

Mint chip.

OurPPA asked: Early bird or a night owl?

Night owl.

OurPPA asked: Favorite food:

Sushi!

OurPPA asked: Favorite (clean) word:

Clean? Oh man. Probably "Yes."

OurPPA asked: Where did you attend college? What did you major in?

I graduated from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. I double-majored in Fine Art and Graphic Design, with a double-minor in Art History and English.

OurPPA asked: What was the worst job you've ever had?

I worked concessions at a stock car track one summer. I did the sno-cones and nachos and it was a mess. It was the worst combination of salty and sweet--just the worst.

OurPPA asked: You love to travel - What's your favorite place to visit?

I spoke to the Photography Association in Denmark a few years ago, and that was wonderful. I also enjoy going to Hawaii--they have the best shaved ice! I also did the first trip down to Ecuador with Travis Gugelman and Lori Nordstrom with Dando Amor, photographing orphans.

Panolapse Fakes Camera Moves On Time Lapse Footage

Readers on this blog know that I am a big fan off adding movement on time lapse footage. This can be done with motorized sliders, rotating pano heads and even a BBQ rotisserie. However those are sometimes hard (or expensive) to set up.

If you are looking for "dirty trick" to add motion to a static time lapse you could to it in after effects, or you could check out the new boy in town - Panolapse.

Fury, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve – Diving Into Digital Medium Format

This weekend I went out with some new gear to test, namely the Hasselblad H5D medium format DSLR and Hasselblad 300mm f/4.5 lens via BorrowLenses.com. The location of choice was Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. The H5D has roughly twice the resolution as my Canon 5D Mark II with a whopping 40 megapixels per image.  I had been curious to find out if Hasselblad’s reputation was hype or not. To cut to the chase I’ll tell you that the reputation is justified.  Focusing just on resolution for the sake of this post I’ll tell you that working with a 40 megapixel image is breathtaking especially when Hasselblad optics reveal so much sharp detail. Above is the original image I took (7304 x 4578 pixels) before cropping it down to a ~2:1 ration (7304 x 3539 pixels). This particular composition I knew ahead of time I’d crop down into a panoramic format as much of the extreme background and foreground were uninteresting and unnecessary to include. Above is a tighter crop into the image to highlight the sharpness Hasselblad lenses provide.  This particular image was cropped down to 2604 x 1953 pixels and below is a 1 to 1 crop of the original image. In case you were curious this was the setup for the previous test shots. Expect a few more photos and thoughts on my experience with Hasselblad in the near future. Tremendous Example of Black and White Portraits Photography (30)

Colors are important for a lively experience in this universe. Colors appear better when the person looking at it is happy. The jolly mood changes the way color makes the visuals. If you see, colors are everywhere, it’s right there in the blue sky, along with the green field meeting that sky at horizon. It’s in the red flower as well it’s in the multicolored butterfly. It seems that the almighty has done some kind of painting over the canvas of life. But the people on this whole earth have even tried to make the use of colors much more enthusiastic by replacing them with the original negative shades. Yes the Black and White Portraits photography are something that shows the beauty of an object without using colors. The characteristics of a good portrait consist of the exposure of the subject beyond the exact appearance in the portrait. The Black and White Portrait Photography has an additional layer of depth and complexity that makes them portray the frame as a whole and not as an impression of some instantaneous event. The choice of colors in black and white portraits photography is not so wide. The artist creating a black and white portrait follows extreme level of imagination. The spectrum that confines the expressions, the visuals, the whole-factor runs over the range of almost everything. What is in front of camera and what it appears in the final output as a portrait is greatly dependent on the color combination to be followed. Black and white portraits photography is something that creates a magic without colors.  The lighting, the composition the contrast or even brightness plays an important role in a black and white portrait. The black and white portraits photography doesn’t attract the viewer with the range and play of colors rather it is completely a skill call. Some French guys decided to see how much abuse a Nikon D3s could take before it failed to take a picture. Turns out, quite a lot. Although why they chose to do this, I have no idea. They doused it in water, plastered it in mud, froze it in a block of ice, and even set it on fire. Watch the full video below to see all the abuse the camera took. But it's in French....

Records Shed Light on How Exhibitions Come to Life

A scientifically accurate life-size replica of Titanoboa, the biggest snake to have ever roamed the earth.Even though I work at the Smithsonian Institution there are quite a few exhibitions throughout the museums and galleries that I don’t get around to visiting because there are not enough hours in the day. This includes the monster snake Titanoboa. Luckily my children did get to view it up close in all its frightening glory at the National Museum of Natural History last year. Nevertheless, I do get to work with the planning records of some of the Smithsonian exhibitions in my job. These records deal with the design, execution, and installation of exhibitions.

A wall plan for one of the walls in the exhibition Smithsonian 2008 Artists at Work.

Digital files in these collections can include correspondence, memoranda, concepts, proposals, scripts, label texts, catalogs, promotional materials, clippings, installation photographs, floor plans, drawings, graphics, checklists, schedules, visitor comment books, notes, and other related materials. Going though these records  gives me a real appreciation for all the work that goes into planning and opening an exhibition, which can take years and many phases. Multiple offices and contractors also can be part of the process.

A screenshot of the Piano 300 exhibition website. Even though the exhibition ended in 2001, the site remained available online until 2013.

Exhibition space has to be carefully laid out. The Office of Exhibit Central’s floor plans for the Smithsonian 2008 Artists at Work offer great details of where each object would go in the juried exhibition that featured 70 works created by Smithsonian staff, fellows, interns, and volunteers. This work was done using CAD (computer-assisted design) software.

Many exhibitions also have an online presence now either through websites or social media. Not only did the Piano 300 website serve as a companion piece for more than a decade to the Piano 300 exhibition that ran from 2000-2001, it also demonstrates how website design has changed since 2000. The website was recently removed but has been archived.

Latinos in U.S. Popular Music map poster as part of the educational materials for American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music. Some exhibitions also travel to other institutions after being on view at the Smithsonian in coordination with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music was one of those, which is now on exhibit at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Some of these records include educational materials for classroom use.

The Smithsonian also maintains a wonderful database of past (starting from the 1980s), current, and upcoming exhibitions as well. For instance, American Art at the 1893 World's Fair was held at the National Portrait Museum in 1993 to mark the 100th anniversary of World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This database  serves as another tool that notes the history of the various museums, galleries, and research centers at the Smithsonian and their role in telling many stories.

Exhibition records are a rich resource that can document how museum exhibitions have evolved over time or how a specific object was described and used within an exhibition.  These records offer a deeper understanding of all the hard work that was needed to make an exhibition a reality.
